‘The Bachelor’s’ Matt James Announces Rachael Kirkconnell Break Up After 4 Years Together
Much like Paris, the Bahamas, Tulum, Bali and any of the many far-flung places the franchise frequents, The Bachelor has proven to be the perfect place to fall in love.
Staying committed after the helicopters have been grounded and the tea lights blown out, however, that’s trickier than dragging a hot tub out to an empty field.
Seemingly announcing the end of his relationship to Rachael Kirkconnell some four years after she nabbed his final rose, former Bachelor Matt James wrote in a Jan. 16 Instagram post, “Father God, give Rachael and I strength to mend our broken hearts. Give us a peace about this decision to end our relationship that transcends worldly understanding.”
In other words, the bloom has fully come off the rose, their four-year romance weathering scandal and a post-show split but ultimately not ending with the pair exchanging Neil Lane rings.
Still, they had found a way to enjoy a decidedly not dramatic existence after finding love on air.
“At the end of the day, there are things that should just be kept between us two,” Matt explained to E! News last July of the choice to not post a constant highlight reel of their love online. “It’s what makes it really special. I love sharing everything that we can with everyone who supports us, any kind of fans out there. But you know at the end of the day, it is just us two in this relationship, and I think we just want to keep that as special as we can.”
And sometimes, Rachael added, they simply wanted to do their own thing, but “I think that’s where a lot of people freak out about is that they’re not seeing us together 24/7.”
So, yes, many of the roses on the ABC love hunt do seem to have their thorns. But there are some couples who are still very much enjoying their journey.

Though Bachelor alum Kelsey Anderson recently revealed she had to take her engagement ring in for repairs, her relationship with fiancé Joey Graziadei requires no such fixing. “I know I’m in a public relationship and that’s why people are like, ‘What?’” she shared in a Jan. 12 TikTok. “But yeah, all good in the hood over here.”
And season 27 lead Zach Shallcross is bunking in Austin with future wife Kaity Biggar while they plan their October vows.
As for former Bachelorette Charity Lawson, she is still very much sporting the Neil Lane diamond Dotun Olubeko presented her with during her 2023 finale, though she’s announced that they’ve put a pause on wedding prep for now.
So we’ll have plenty of opportunities to propose a “cheers” to the pairs who still see forever in each other’s eyes. For now, though, we’re pouring a little of that champagne out for the couples whose paradise was short-lived.
