Naya Rivera’s Ex Ryan Dorsey Details Relationship With Her Sister
Naya Rivera’s Son Josey Tried to Throw Her a Rope to Save Her From Drowning
Ryan Dorsey is setting the record straight.
Nearly four years after his ex Naya Rivera died in 2020, the actor addressed why he had the Glee star’s sister Nickayla Rivera move in with him and Naya’s now-9-year-old son, Josey for nearly a year after the tragic drowning that claimed Naya’s life.
“She served as somewhat of a female figure and helped be the other voice of reason,” Ryan told People of Nickayla in an interview published Feb. 13. “She was such a big help.”
The 41-year-old—who was married to Naya from 2014 to 2018—emphasized that he opted to live with Naya’s sister to give his son “consistency” after his ex wife’s death.
“I wanted to keep [Josey’s] life somewhat normal,” he continued, “and I knew I was going to be out of town working. I had to go to Vancouver for five months and Josey came the last month to stay with me, but during the time I was gone she held it down.”
He added, “It was very surreal sometimes because the way she would say things to Josey would sound like his mom.”
However, the Big Sky actor slammed rumors that circulated just months after his ex’s death, insinuating something romantic was brewing between himself and Nickayla after paparazzi photos of the pair shopping together made them appear like a couple.
“The funny thing is, it did look like we were holding hands, but we grazed fingers on the escalator, and then it was this whole thing,” Ryan, who noted that some fans even speculated he and Nickayla had something to do with Naya’s death, explained. “That was the only time I’ve ever addressed anything on social media because it was just so insane.”
Indeed, just weeks after Naya’s death, various media outlets and fans on social media speculated as to why Ryan and Nickayla were spending so much time together. For Nickayla’s part, she shared a lengthy Instagram Story post about simply “showing up” for her nephew.
Ryan likewise pushed back on any negative attention he and Nickayla were receiving amid the dark time in their lives. As he said in a September 2020 Instagram Story, “It’s truly sad that this is the world that we live in, where people were raised to think it’s OK to just spew hatred in general.”

Ultimately, Ryan decided to leave Los Angeles altogether following Naya’s death, citing rent costs and trying to prepare for Josey’s future, while Nickayla remained in California with the rest of Naya’s family.
“West Virginia is just a completely different place,” he said of his and his son’s new home and the state where he grew up. “There’s not much to do, but it feels safe and there’s no traffic.”

Tribute to Naya
Naya’s ex Ryan Dorsey shared this photo of the late actress and their son, their only child, two weeks after she drowned during a boating trip with the boy.
“This is so unfair…there’s not enough words to express the hole left in everyone’s hearts,” Ryan wrote on Instagram. “I can’t believe this is life now. I don’t know if I’ll ever believe it. You were just here… We were just in the back swimming with Josey the day before. Life just isn’t fair.”
He continued, “I don’t know what to say…I’m thankful for our times and our journey that brought us together and gave us the sweetest and kindest smart little boy we could ever hope for. I remember sometimes you used to get annoyed at me: ‘Ryan can you stop snap chatting!’ Haha. I’m glad I didn’t listen to you because I have hundreds and probably thousands of snaps and videos that Josey will have forever and know his momma loved him more than life, and how much fun we had together as he was growing up. Life is all about good times and bad times but with Josey it makes the bad a little less so because a part of you will always be with us. He’ll never forget where he came from. We miss you. We will always love you. Love you Meep.”
