“On October 3rd, he asked me what day it was.”
While Mean Girls came out on April 30, 2004, October 3rd has since become “Mean Girls Day,” the iconic film’s new anniversary date and an enduring pop culture meme. Although, we don’t think Gretchen Wieners’ father, the inventor of Toaster Strudel, would be too pleased to hear that Tina Fey didn’t initially grasp how fetch this day is.
“The one that I didn’t even realize was a thing until we started working on the Broadway musical was the thing of October 3—that people remember anything to do with her saying, ‘It’s October 3,’” the film’s writer—who was inspired by Rosalind Wiseman‘s book Queen Bees and Wannabes—told Gayety in January “because that’s barely even a joke in the original movie. I was trying to move time forward in the story.”
Besides, it’s not her fault fans are in love with the line or something. In the movie, Cady Herron (Lindsay Lohan) lives for any and all interactions with Aaron Samuels (Jonathan Bennett), her swoon-worthy crush with side-swept bangs that would’ve made Justin Bieber jealous. At one point, he asks her what day it is.
Now, 20 years later, that date is practically considered a national holiday, with fans often wearing pink and eating cheese fries to celebrate. You go, Glen Coco!

And, because we’re not just regular fans, we’re cool fans of the movie—which also starred Rachel McAdams, Lacey Chabert and Amanda Seyfried as the Plastics and inspired a 2024 film adaptation of the Broadway musical—we’re celebrating the anniversary of what is arguably the most important exchange about a date in pop culture history.
So, while there’s a 30 percent chance it’s already raining, there’s also a 100 percent chance you will enjoy these grool behind-the-scenes facts about Mean Girls:
